DMAE and CoQ10: The Science Behind Firmer-Looking Skin

DMAE and CoQ10: The Science Behind Firmer-Looking Skin

“Firmer-looking skin” is one of the most searched goals in skincare. Two ingredients come up again and again in that conversation: DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). Here's what each one does, what the research shows, and why we put them together.

What makes skin look firm?

Skin's appearance comes down to a few things working together: how much water the surface holds, how the collagen and elastin network beneath it is arranged, and how well skin is protected from daily oxidative stress. A great firming cream addresses all three: it hydrates the surface, supports smoother-looking texture, and brings antioxidant care to the routine.

The American Academy of Dermatology puts moisturizer and sunscreen at the foundation of any routine for aging skin. A firming cream builds on that foundation.

What is DMAE?

DMAE, also called deanol, is a compound related to choline, a nutrient the body uses to build cell membranes. In skincare, it's studied for its effect on how firm and toned skin looks and feels.

In a randomized, double-blind, split-face study, researchers compared a 3% DMAE gel with a matching gel without DMAE. An instrumental measure of the skin's mechanical behavior favored the DMAE side.

A 2005 review in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology summarized a placebo-controlled study in which a 3% DMAE facial gel was applied daily for 16 weeks. The DMAE group showed improvements in forehead lines and fine wrinkles around the eyes, with irritation rates similar to placebo.

What does CoQ10 add?

Coenzyme Q10, also called ubiquinone, is naturally present in the body, where it powers cellular energy production and acts as an antioxidant. Levels decline with age, which is why it's become a favorite in skincare for mature skin.

A 2015 controlled study of 73 women found that topical CoQ10 formulations increased CoQ10 levels in the skin and improved antioxidant-related measurements.

Why hydration completes the picture

When skin is dry, its surface looks rougher and fine lines show more. Hydration is the fastest way to see smoother, more supple-looking skin, and it's the domino that sets up everything else.

That's why we added hyaluronic acid, a humectant that binds water to the skin's surface. A 2022 review of topical hyaluronic acid describes its role in hydration and the look of smoother skin.

Meet the DMAE + CoQ10 Firming Cream

Our DMAE + CoQ10 Firming Cream brings all three together: DMAE for a firmer, more toned look, CoQ10 for antioxidant care, and hyaluronic acid for lasting moisture. Avocado oil, almond oil, aloe vera and vitamin E give it a rich, nourishing texture that leaves skin soft and supple.

Want to boost the hydration even further? Layer our 4-Type Hyaluronic Acid Serum underneath.

How to build a firming routine

  • Cleanse gently, morning and night.
  • Hydrate with a hyaluronic acid serum on slightly damp skin.
  • Firm: apply the DMAE + CoQ10 Firming Cream to face and neck.
  • Protect: finish mornings with broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher. The AAD calls sunscreen and moisturizer the two most practical steps for the look of aging skin.

Patch test first, especially if rich creams have bothered your skin before.

Frequently asked questions

What does DMAE do for skin?

DMAE is studied for its effect on how firm and toned skin looks. In a 16-week placebo-controlled study, a 3% DMAE gel improved forehead lines and fine wrinkles around the eyes.

Is DMAE a peptide?

No. DMAE is a choline-related compound, a different ingredient class with its own research.

Can I use a firming cream with retinol?

Yes. Apply your retinol serum first at night, then the firming cream on top to lock in moisture.

When will I notice a difference?

Skin feels softer and more supple from the first application. Firmer, smoother-looking skin builds with every week of consistent use.

The Domi Effect: firming, one layer at a time

Hydration smooths the surface. Antioxidants protect it. Targeted ingredients firm the look of it. Each layer sets up the next, and together they build toward skin that looks smoother, firmer and more supple.
